March, the very beginning of April, and the end of an era

This post had to wait until April 3, 2026 because it’s capturing the last of an era for our family. For over 25 years we have been Akamites, members of the Akamai family. But today that ends actively. We are now Akamai alumni, and we are now starting a new chapter, one where our time is very much our own. In the coming months I will talk about what is next for the Underhills, but for now I’ll pivot back to summarizing March.

This year we opted to stay in Florida one month longer than the past couple years, primarily because it just felt too soon to take off in March. We wanted more time with my parents, more time with our cute little house, and more time experiencing the state. Plus with the big change referenced earlier, if didn’t feel right to have all that happening while we were actively Nomading.

But while we were still in Florida we were still exploring. Larry coined the term Appetizer Travels, little weekend trips that we squeezed in so that we could see friends, have novel experiences, spring Louie from RV jail, and keep some momentum on Faux Bird Season Three.

We kayaked 8 miles through 8 springs; we spent some time in Gainesville and St Augustine; we had a Magpies and Mag-guys weekend where Louie cosplayed as a Pizza Truck; we celebrated my mom’s birthday; we caught up with the Turners in Charleston, SC; and we had some whirlwind travel for Larry’s victory lap, first to Cambridge where we had a surprise going-away party for him, and then to Ft Lauderdale for his last day with the company. It was a fast busy couple of weeks, and they all led up to Larry’s transition out of the company and our transition into the full on travel. This time next week, we will be on the road and we will not be back to Florida until December.
