A brief stop in Savannah and then home

I was reminded yesterday that I’ve been remiss in updating the blog. I guess once I got home and started opening the house again and doing the massive amounts of errands, chores, Christmas decorating, and mountains of laundry I forgot to record our last, unplanned, nomading get-away for 2025. So here’s to completion issues.

We left Dickson and headed southeast. Because it was a sizable drive to get back to Barefoot Bay, and we were doing it with two vehicles (caravan in the literal sense), and doing it during working hours, we decided we should break up the return. We were going to go to Gulf Shores, AL, and then poke through the panhandle, but the weather forecast was very wet and very (relatively) cold. We made an audible and instead headed for Savannah, Georgia. I mean, what’s the sense of having our home on wheels if we don’t chase the good weather (or at least run from the bad). We both really loved being in Louie again after a month apart and were happy to take our time getting back.

We found an adorable little camping site a short drive from the downtown on a working farm. We ended up staying three nights. Working during the day and exploring Savannah in the evenings. While the city definitely took a hit over covid — there were a lot of businesses papered and shuttered, and maybe more unhoused folks than I remember from last time — it was still as charming and enchanting as ever. Tidy, walkable, framed with ancient oaks and Spanish moss, there’s something very special about Savannah. We wandered from square to square, admiring the homes, and appreciating the holiday decor. We ate and drank very well while there, and sparked up conversations with strangers effortlessly.

Then it was time to head home. I drove the car directly from Savannah to Barefoot Bay. Larry had to inch along between work calls. We arrived and began the enjoyable tasks of opening our home and the wonderful feeling of hugging mom and dad again. It’s lovely to all be back together again. Soon we will add Merrie to the mix. We were greeted warmly by my folks and by our fridge, which unfortunately decided to die. Luckily I hadn’t done any grocery shopping before discovering that. So we’ve done a fair amount of eating out while we wait for delivery. Happily we have an excellent Japanese restaurant not too far from home.

And with our arrival in Florida, our Season Two of Nomading officially comes to a close. Stay tuned for what Season Three promises. It’s gonna be pretty cool.
