It’s hard to believe that we are entering our final days here in San Miguel. The month has gone by very quickly, and these last few days promise to evaporate just as rapidly. We have a lot queued up between now and when we head to the airport on Saturday. This past week was spent in the normal, if boring, living: work, gym, studying, grocery shopping, and cooking and eating at home. But this weekend we’ve made it a point to be out and about, enjoying the little neighborhoods, exploring alleys and streets, wandering and getting ourselves lost among the cobbles and the stucco. Seeking out rooftops and church pews. Peeking in open doors and stepping into hidden courtyards.
There really is a lot for the senses here. Everywhere there is art, from street murals to fine art galleries. Everywhere there is music, from whistling workers to roaming mariachi. Everywhere there is food, from street tacos to high end cuisine. Noise is a constant here. Fireworks at all times of the day and night. Dilapidated vehicles thundering down cobblestoned streets. Fountains gurgling. Clanging bells from churches and garbage trucks. Dogs barking. Children laughing. People making merry well into the wee hours. In fact, I achieved a new milestone in language acquisition last night when I successfully scolded three very loud, very drunk people off our doorstep who were loitering overlong at 3am. Por el amor de Dios! ¡Ve! Por favor, hay gente durmiendo aquí. And I’ll be damned, but it worked. People here are actually very nice and very kind, even when a little loud and tipsy.
Anyway, here are a few photos from this past week’s explorations for your viewing pleasure.
