Week four in Buenos Aires

Our last week in Buenos Aires was balanced with playing tourist and taking care of the normal things. Because my classes were over, I was able to spend a little more time on seeing some sights. I toured the Colón Theater and the Bella Arts Museum. I explored more neighborhoods including Chinatown and a revisit to La Boca and Recoleta. Our last day was spent exploring our neighborhood of Palermo a bit more, shopping at the market stalls, wandering the mercardo de las pulgas, and appreciating all the variety of street art tucked everywhere. This week we were also able to appreciate more the art of tango. We had a great infusion of tango this week with a dance lesson, a visit to a milonga, and a broadway level dinner and show of excellent tango dancing, music, singing, and performing. This last week was also filled with delicious foods, from the local lunch buffet spot with excellent fare, to a fancy-pants neighborhood institution restaurant. We also had a wide range of other foods including Armenian, Italian, seafood, and of course, many of the foods we’ve come to associate with Argentina: steak, choripan, empanadas, ice cream, dulce de leche, deep dish, cheesy, oniony pizza, and of course, proveleta.

I am writing this summary from our home in Florida. We flew in early this morning (overnight flight) and in some ways it feels like we’ve been home for days, in other ways it feels impossible to believe we were in South America just yesterday. Time is funny.

I am very grateful for our chance to visit Buenos Aires and to have the luxury of time. A month is a nice measure of time to begin to know a place. I hope we are able to visit Buenos Aires again. There’s still so much to see.
